OS Upgrade Testing

If you are in the testing release channel in the JSS, you will receive potential OS X upgrades before users in stable. It is vital to the smooth running of the Orchard service that you test these OS upgrades when they are available to you and report back to the Orchard team any problems that arise.

Prior to installing

Please ensure you have taken a full backup with whatever method you prefer. The HFS TSM Client is available in the Orchard Software Centre.

Upgrading

The OS upgrade will be available in the Orchard Software Centre as an update - e.g. "Install OS X El Capitan". When you click Update it will download, and you will then need to switch to the Updates tab and select Update to begin the install process. You will be asked to log out, at which point the installer will be copied to the boot partition and then the machine will restart to install it. This could take up to an hour depending on the speed of your hard drive. Your machine will reboot again, and then the Orchard Software Centre will install any updated packages for the new OS. Your machine will be safe to use once the Orchard Software Centre has disappeared from the screen and you are left with a login box.

In particular it is important that you test the following:

OS Upgrade

  • Check that the OS has upgraded successfully. Ensure that "About This Mac" shows the version of OS X that you are expecting to see post-upgrade.
  • Check that the JSS reflects this change in its inventory. Check the Policy Logs in the JSS for any failures that arise after the time of the OS upgrade.

Printing

  • Check that all the printers that you should have installed are available
  • Check that you can still successfully print to all printers that are assigned to your Site. If you cannot, please ensure you note the printer name and the exact error that occurs when you try.

Software

  • Check as much software as you can for compatibility issues. Pay particular attention to Microsoft Office applications, and those which are regularly used at your Site.
