Setting Up Your Orchard Mac (Automated Device Enrollment)

With Orchard, it's possible to have your new Mac shipped to wherever you are in the UK and for it to be automatically enrolled in management, meaning that after a short while of setting up your computer will be ready to use without IT ever needing to touch it.

Prerequisites

You should only attempt this setup if you work in a unit that is an Orchard customer and you have been told that your device has been set up to automatically enrol. Information for units on how to purchase equipment so that it automatically enrols in Orchard can be found on this page. Please do not unbox or switch on your device until it is confirmed that it has been configured to do so.

Method

  1. Take your Mac out of the box and connect it to power.
  2. Turn on your Mac
  3. Wait for the Mac to load. It will automatically launch the Setup Assistant asking you to choose a language.
  4. If you are not already connected via Ethernet, the next page will ask you to enter your Wi-Fi network and password
  5. You will now see the following screen, indicating that the computer is set up for Remote Management by the University of Oxford; click Next
  6. After a short while you'll be asked to enter your username and password. This should be the same one you use to log in to a computer normally at the office.
  7. Complete the other screens of the Setup Assistant, making sure to set your Location either automatically or manually so that the clock is correct
  8. You will end up at a login window, please enter your username and password again.
  9. Shortly after you log in, the screen should lock and tell you to wait while the Mac is enrolled in Orchard
  10. This screen will clear and a new screen will come up explaining how to choose your software bundle. Click Continue and then choose your software bundle
  11. Orchard will now configure your Mac, download the software bundle you selected, and then take a final inventory.
  12. When it is done, click Finish and please _wait_ for up to 2 minutes for the Mac to restart.
  13. After the computer restarts, log in normally.
    1. If you are using a MacBook, you will get a prompt to start encryption, which you should start. Your recovery key will be stored with us automatically in the event that you forget the password to your encrypted MacBook.
